What is a crispy squishy?
Oct 02, 2026 · by Crinklet

A crispy squishy is a squishy toy with a thin, crisp shell on the outside. Squeeze it and the shell cracks. You hear the crunch and feel it give under your fingers, and then you are left with something soft to keep squishing.
You will see them called a lot of names: crispy squishy, crunchy squishy, wax cracking squishy, or 脆皮捏捏 in Chinese. They all mean the same family of toy: a shell that cracks over a core that squishes.
Where the trend came from
The name 脆皮捏捏 (cuì pí niē niē) means "crispy-skin squishy". The trend took off on Douyin, where people film themselves slowly cracking handmade squishies shaped like food, close to the microphone so every crunch comes through. It is the same appeal as ASMR: a small, clean sound and a texture that changes as you play.
How a Crinklet works
Every Crinklet is made by hand in two layers:
- The shell: a thin layer of wax. This is the part that cracks.
- The core: soft clay. Once the shell is gone, this is what you squish.
The first squeeze is the big moment. The wax cracks, splinters and starts to crumble. Keep pressing and the pieces fall away. Underneath, the clay squishes like play-dough and keeps whatever shape you press into it - it does not spring back like a foam squishy.
Why they come in food shapes
Part of the fun is that they look good enough to eat. Crinklet makes sushi, croissants, burst fish balls, lotus root slices, osmanthus rice cakes, fried eggs and more. Because each one is handmade, colours and shapes vary a little, and no two crack the same way.
(They are still not food. Please do not eat them. Crinklet squishies are for ages 15+.)
Is the crack one-time?
Yes. The shell cracks once, and that first crunch is the main event. After that you have a soft clay squishy to keep playing with. That is why many people like a pack set: more pieces means more first cracks.
